A Rubik’s cube timer for speedcubing
This cube timer works like the timers used by speedcubers: you hold a key until the display turns green, release to start the clock and press any key to stop it. It records every solve in this tab and works out your best time, mean, average of 5 and average of 12. It suits the 3x3 Rubik’s Cube and every other puzzle you want to time.
How to use the cube timer
- Scramble your cube. Rest your fingertips on the Space key – or press and hold the timer area on a touch screen.
- The display turns red while you hold, and green after a short moment. Release when it is green and the timer starts.
- Solve the cube, then press any key (or tap) to stop. The time is saved.
- Use +2 or DNF to mark a penalty on the last solve, or Delete last to remove it.
Inspection time
In official World Cube Association competitions, every attempt starts with up to 15 seconds of inspection, in which you may look at the puzzle but not turn it. Starting the solve after 15 seconds and up to 17 seconds adds a 2-second penalty; starting later is a DNF (did not finish). Tick 15-second inspection to practise this: hold and release to start the inspection countdown, then hold and release again to start the solve. This timer applies the penalties for you.

How averages are calculated
An average of 5 drops your fastest and slowest of the last five solves and takes the mean of the other three. An average of 12 drops the fastest and slowest of the last twelve and averages the remaining ten. A DNF counts as the slowest time. The mean is the plain average of all your valid solves.
Good to know
Solves stay in this browser tab only while your browser allows session storage, and nothing is sent to a server. Use Copy times to save them elsewhere. Times are read from the browser’s high-resolution clock, but screen refresh and your keyboard add a few milliseconds, so compare times only with results from the same device. For general timing see the online stopwatch.
Frequently asked questions
Still have a question? Get in touch
How do I use a cube timer?
Hold the Space key (or press and hold the timer area on a touch screen) until the display turns green, release to start, then press any key or tap to stop.
Does the timer have inspection time?
Yes. Tick 15-second inspection to count down 15 seconds before each solve. Starting after 15 and up to 17 seconds adds a 2-second penalty, and later is a DNF, as in official competition.
How is the average of 5 calculated?
Your fastest and slowest of the last five solves are dropped and the other three are averaged. A DNF counts as the slowest time.
Are my solve times saved?
They are kept in this browser tab while it stays open and your browser allows session storage. Use Copy times to keep them; nothing is sent to a server.
Can I use it for puzzles other than the 3x3 cube?
Yes. It is a plain solve timer, so it works for any puzzle, from a 2x2 to a Megaminx, and for any other short timed task.
