A timer for PowerPoint and Google Slides

Neither a conference slot nor a classroom presentation waits for you to look at your watch. This presentation timer is a countdown that runs in the browser next to your slides, so you can see how much of your time is left while you present. It does not need an add-in or any change to your slide deck.

How to use a timer with your slides

  • Open this page in its own browser window or tab and choose your talk length with the quick buttons.
  • Press Start timer when you begin your first slide.
  • Place the timer window where you can see it – on a second screen, on a phone or tablet beside your laptop, or next to the speaker notes.
  • Press Full screen on that window if you want large numbers visible from the stage.

Add a link to the timer in your deck

In both PowerPoint and Google Slides you can select text or a shape and use Insert, then Link, to add this page’s address. During the show, the link opens the timer in your browser. Use the Copy link to this timer option under More options to save a link with your chosen length.

Planning your time

A simple way to plan is to divide your slot by the number of main points and leave a few minutes for questions. Use the checkpoints on any timer page, for example the 20 minute timer, to see the half-way and last-minutes marks. For a talk with sections, run multiple timers side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Get in touch

Does PowerPoint have a built-in presentation timer?

PowerPoint can record timings for slides, but it does not show a simple countdown for your whole talk. This page gives you that countdown in a separate window.

How do I add a countdown timer to Google Slides?

Run the countdown in this page next to your slides, or add a hyperlink to it on a slide with Insert, then Link. This page does not embed inside the slide itself.

Can I show a timer on a second screen while presenting?

Yes. Open the timer in a browser window on the second screen or on another device, start it with your first slide and use Full screen for large numbers.

Will the alarm work if I leave this tab?

Keep the tab open. Switching to another tab is usually fine, but browsers can slow down pages in the background and may block sound that was never enabled. For the best chance of hearing the alarm, keep this page open and visible and press Test sound first. Closing the tab stops the alarm.

Reset this timer?

The countdown will stop.
